The Cover Archive

Postby Dagon » Sun Nov 18, 2007 3:13 pm

Rather than spend time coding a cover search page (as I said I was going to do) that would search both the archive and main cover areas (and then have that code be useless and unusable after the archive covers are moved into the main area), I spend some time coding a means of speeding up the process of moving/re-adding the covers from the archive.

With this new bit of code in place I'm hoping to move/re-add the covers from the archive quicker than before.

I'm also adding and incorporating all the little tweaks across the site that I had planned, but didn't get a chance to do before the unexpected early "opening".

One thing planned (and coming) is the user ability to vote (nominate) covers for Cover of the Month. Basically any cover added to the site within a given month will have a "CotM Vote" icon on the details page near the cart and watch icons. After Midnight on the 28th of each month this link will vanish (or vanish if you've already voted on said cover [one vote per user per cover]). From the 28th to the 30th this list of "CotM nominees" will be voted via forum poll in a secret forum by a selected group of users/staff/etc. On the 1st the winner will be "announced" via the main page of the site. This will bring the Cover of the Month more to the forefront of user interactivity, whereas in the past it was always arbitrary Admin pickings based on what from the Editor's Picks looks awesome. There will be more details on this as the feature is coded and fully functional. A lot of this concept, idea and implementation comes from icoty, big thanks to him. :yahoo:

Yeah you know I'm sexy....

Shall we shag now, or shall we shag later? How do you like to do it? Do you like to wash up first? You know, top and tails... whore's bath? Personally, before I'm on the job, I like to give my undercarriage a bit of a 'how's your father'!

An update:

If the site is at all slow (er) the next couple days it is because I'm mass-uploading the remaining 12GB of covers from the archive (I can't use the files that are already on the server for a variety of reasons). I had to download all the covers, unzip the ones that are still in ZIPs and then do a re-process on some of them to save them as standard JPG (i.e. NOT Progressive). The GD script can't handle Progressive images. Given current speeds, I estimate another 64 hours of uploading... :cartman:

Okay, an update:

There is, at this moment, 5,090 MB left to upload (I estimate about 30-36 more hours... gotta love my ISP's bandwidth  ). As soon as these are uploaded it will speed things up and I'll be moving covers from the archive post haste.
